Balgarvie Weaving is the work of Textile designer Janet Hughes, who works from her home town of Cupar Fife. Educated at the Scottish college of textiles. Janet draws on her industrial textile design and manufacturing experience to offer limited edition fabric and accessories blending contemporary woven structures and traditional weaving practises. Janet enjoys the process and makes her work by hand in her studio on traditional wooden hand looms utilising industrial surplus/ waste yarn.Janet finds weaving to be a methodical and at times mindful craft and through repetition finds creativity. With the setup of her own design studio Janet enjoys the freedom of designing bold yet lightweight fabrics in her signature deflected double cloth structure, playing with colours, patterns and the natural properties of the yarns differential shrinkage to give tactile as well as visual textures to her fabrics that are accentuated whilst being worn.

Mariam Syed is a passionate woven Textile Designer who designs and weaves fabrics for fashion and interiors in her Glasgow workshop. Mariam’s design practise encapsulates everything she is passionate about: weaving, vibrant colours, architecture and geometry. A mathematician at heart, geometric patterns are quite central to her woven designs. Fascinated with the visual culture of her home city Karachi, Mariam is in awe of the vibrant coloured Pakistani trucks set against the magnificent Colonial British Architecture. Pakistani trucks look like giant kaleidoscopes of brilliant colours and patterns; much like an art gallery on wheels!

I am a hand weaver based in Leith, Edinburgh. I predominately weave using merino lambswool, enjoying the colour variations one gets from this colourful and versatile yarn. I am enjoying examining how many ways I can interpret differing stitched marks and patterns through the medium of weave on a 32 shaft Megado loom; my pride and joy! As well as stitched marks I am currently obsessed by all things denim, sampling is continually evolving as to how I can weave these two trains of thoughts together. I will presenting another mini collection of new woven works at Winter GLOW.

Clarabella Christie is a Fife based awarded design studio specialising in luxury colourful design-led homewares and accessories. Established in 2007 the brand is an ever growing collection of playful printed pieces which draws inspiration from the studio’s surrounding architecture. In the summer of 2021 Claire launched her first ever clothing line Claire launched her first ever clothing line, this handmade small collection of Made-to-Order garments focus’s on craftmanship, sustainability and simple versatile silhouettes.

A weaver in natural fibres utilising antique hand looms. Nell weaves sea and mountain, coast and peak, capturing movement, pattern and texture to create textiles embedded with underlying codes and a significance of place, time and memory. Nell’s work has been exhibited at the New Ashgate Gallery, the National Centre for Craft and Design, and has been featured in the Financial Times and profiled on the Artist Support Pledge.Nell is a member of the Crafts Council.

I’m a printed textile designer who specialises in the traditional method of screen print to create a range of contemporary prints for a range of products. Intrigued by the shapes and patterns that surround us in the everyday, I draw my inspiration from these to create graphic and abstract surface pattern prints. I enjoy experimenting with a whole variety of colour combinations, from sophisticated and subtle palettes, to bold and bright. Each one of my products is unique as they are all hand made from start to finish and no two prints are ever exactly the same.

Newburgh Handloom Weavers are specialist producers of high quality, hand-woven tweed and cloth. Situated by the River Tay, in the North-East of Fife, our cloth is handwoven on traditional wooden handlooms built by Thomas Kennedy of Galashiels, a loom maker established in 1870. We produce a wide range of traditional tweeds, blankets, including bespoke tweeds designed and made to order for both individual and commercial clients. We weave our cloth using pure new wool from around the British Isles. This produces a warm and fine, yet hard-wearing cloth perfect for tailoring, dress-making, upholstery and furnishings.

K.Moods is a contemporary Scottish knitwear brand, aimed towards socially conscious and design-led adults who are searching for sustainably produced and locally made textile products; Kathleen creates boldly colourful, knitted unisex fashion, as well as accessories, and vibrant soft furnishings. With K.Moods you will find yourself wrapped in cosy scarves, statement cotton socks, and stand out in the crowd with reversible hats, all from a zero-waste Edinburgh knitwear design studio.

I am a textile artist working with free-machine embroidery to decorate the clothing and soft furnishings that I make, mainly on a commission basis. Inspired by flora and fauna I study the details of each animal or flower to recreate it in stitch. The rich colours and way that light catches on say a bird’s wing or lilies petal is recreated with my process of drawing and painting with thread. Each piece becomes a little treasure reminding the wearer or owner of how precious our wildlife is and how surprising colours can be found in everyday creatures and plants.

Texture and pattern have always held a lifelong fascination for me. Studying Textiles at Ravensbourne and then Camberwell College of Arts gave me a further opportunity for research and insight into surface design and construction of cloth. I Began to develop a wide interest in applied arts and design. However, print has been my enduring passion since graduating. Etching, Collagraph, monoprint and relief techniques and more recently a return to screen printing. I have worked in Contemporary Galleries; CCA Galleries, Cambridge. Edinburgh Printmakers, Dovecot Studios, all of which contributed to my interest and development in working with contemporary artists either through installation of exhibitions or organising events & educational programmes. This has in turn brought me full circle to return to teaching and making and designing Art Textiles.

Helen Ruth is a luxury accessories label specialising in digitally printed silk and wool scarves, printed and hand finished in Scotland. Each scarf starts with original hand drawn illustrations, usually in pen and ink. Artworks are then converted to digital files, coloured, repeated, mirrored and collaged to create the intricate and layered prints of the scarves. Each scarf tells its own story - a well loved tale, a saying, or a personal childhood memory, giving the wearer an emotional connection the piece. Often spiking beautiful design and illustration with subtle sinister undertones, there is always more than meets the eye!

Teacher, bookartist, and author, Rachel Hazell has been taking people on creative journeys for over twenty years. Living between the Inner Hebrides and the city of Edinburgh, brings contrasting inspirations for her limited edition bindings. Virtual retreats, online classes and in-person workshops mean you can work with The Travelling Bookbinder anywhere in the world! Rachel read English at Edinburgh University, trained in Bookbinding at the London College of Printing and completed Masters degrees in Book Art at Camberwell College of Art, and Printmaking at Edinburgh College of Art. She believes that everyone has a book inside them.

Sally Weatherill studied art history and printed/woven textiles in the US before moving to the UK. Here she set up a studio on the Suffolk/Essex border where she designs and produces woven fabrics for fashion and interiors. Distinctive in its rich colour and textural interest, her work draws references from the world of art as well as from daily experience to create designs that are modern yet timeless. Woven primarily with UK sourced lambswool from a family run business ensures the best quality. Sally’s luxurious fabrics are handmade in the UK in limited editions to preserve their uniqueness.

Olive is a designer-maker specialising in luxurious, knitted accessories in merino lambswool and cashmere. Combining traditional techniques with contemporary design she creates slow-fashion heirloom pieces in her signature colours and geometric repeat patterns that play with perceptions. Inspiration comes from all around from manhole covers and zips to architectural details and ripples in the sand. Olive hand-frames everything on a vintage, manual machine in her Glasgow studio enabling her to provide a bespoke service for clients who can commission their own design or order any design and colour combination to create their own unique scarf.

Acme Atelier is the studio of designer and kiltmaker Andrea Chappell, who creates bespoke, contemporary kilts that combine heritage crafts and modern design. Using a resourceful and sustainable means of making I promote traditional skills whilst exploring wider possibilities for construction techniques and textile creation. Each kilt tells a story, expressing the individuality of a person, place or event, that records memories and moments to create a modern family heirloom to pass through generations.

I make lasting quality, artful, hand tufted wool pile textile. Recently I’ve been experimenting with hand dyeing finished pieces for fluidity of design effect. I like the idea of my work inviting connection with true nature in a deeper way by inviting people to relax, reflect, rejuvenate through use of mindfulness/ meditation mats, stools and wall art rugs. Sharing appreciation of our world is the object of my work and long standing interest in health/mental health, consciousness, archetype. One of my influences is the work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, painter, architect, ecological activist and philosopher. 

Inga is a Printed Textile Designer based in North Queensferry, Fife. Using a Vintage colour palette, her design inspiration comes from pattern, colour, texture, nature, and the Arts & Crafts movement. She carves her unique designs from Lino blocks and then, using Eco-Friendly water-based inks, prints onto Scottish Linen fabric woven locally in Fife, which she then creates into her range of sustainable Homewares and Accessories. Inga is passionate about doing what she can to help protect the Environment. Her creative process aims to be sustainable, minimising wastage, and she uses recycled and recyclable plastic free packaging.

Chantal is a woven designer based in Glasgow, who draws visual reference for her work from geometric & structural forms whether manmade or natural. ‘The reason I create fabrics & products is primarily because I love the challenge, processes & patience required. Being able to mix different colours & textures together in a way that lets me translate visual research into a woven piece gives me great personal satisfaction. I really just like to make beautiful cloth, the touch, smell & texture of it, & the feeling of being wrapped in something created by hand from a craft steeped in history.’

Flora Collingwood-Norris designs and makes ethical knitwear from her studio in Galashiels, using the finest natural fibres. Inspired by colours in Scottish landscapes, her scarves, hats and mitts are designed to uplift your Winter wardrobe. While most designs are made by hand in the studio, some are made at a local mill in very small batches. Helping you to make your knitwear last a lifetime is a passion of Floras, and she has written a book “Visible creative mending for knitwear” to help you learn how to repair the knitwear you already own.

Lynsey Walters designs and makes textile jewellery and hair accessories, combining handmade and industrial felt. The collection features around necklaces, but also includes earrings, brooches and bangles as well as hair accessories. The work is bright, bold and very wearable. After gaining a BA (Hons) in Printed textiles Lynsey went on to receive a MA at the Royal College of Art – graduating in 2000. After the success of her graduation exhibition she decided to set up her on business initially selling to stores such as Designers Guild and VV Rouleaux.

Bonny Claith luxury scarves and accessories are designed and handwoven by Cally Booker. Cally chooses to work with the highest quality natural materials, because she believes in beauty that lasts: blends of wool and silk which are light and luxurious; natural colour from the yarn itself, and from traditional dyestuffs which are vibrant but gentle and easy-to-wear. Like a live jazz performance, every piece is a unique expression of the distinctive and colourful Bonny Claith style

I weave homewares and wearables in my Burntisland studio, situated in a heritage railway building overlooking The Forth and across to Edinburgh. I weave on a beautiful wooden traditional Swedish floorloom. My inspiration comes from the local marine and built environment and also Scandinavian textile design and colour palette. Traditional weaves are given a contemporary aesthetic and are woven with high quality luxurious lambswools, cotton and linen, organic where possible.

Based in Edinburgh, Woolly Originals uses domestic knitting machines to create bags for crafters and artists to use for their projects and for their tools. The bag designs are based on a range of ideas and inspiration: Scottish wildflowers & trees; organic fruit orchards; Scandinavian & Shetland star motifs; the volcanic landscapes of Iceland; the Scott Monument on Princes Street in Edinburgh; or the trainee women astronauts of the Mercury 13 program!

I am a knitwear designer and maker who works with wool. I believe that the qualities and character of wool give a long lasting garment which is unmatched for warmth and breathability. I love working with colour and I use yarn from a Scottish mill to make hand framed jackets, sweaters and hats. They are fulled to produce soft warm pieces. I live and work in Morar in the northwest highlands of Scotland and after many years of having a shop, I now work from a studio in my garden.

Ailish classifies herself as a research-based practitioner within the arts. She serves as editor-in-chief for Mr X Stitch. She has had two large solo exhibitions and has written for a number of publications, including Selvedge and Embroidery. She is represented by Handmade in Britain, Craft Design House and CRAFT, having developed her own luxury print design label; producing wearable items and those suited for interiors. It is important to her that each product is made using small producers. Her focus lies in telling a visual tale, allowing the purchaser to carry on the narrative.

Al Bates is a textile designer based in Glasgow. She completed her degree in 2021 at the Edinburgh College of Art, achieving a BA Honour’s in Textiles. Her work aims to utilise various fabrics as a space for comfort and growth, in the context of the home. Her practice is rooted in an awareness and consideration of the ethical impacts of the industry, and she thrives to work sustainably to produce pieces that are zero-waste. Combining various techniques, her unique approach juxtaposes textures creates modern and distinctive pieces that are innovative, hand crafted and made with care to last.

Hopipola Handwovens is the studio of handweaver and textile designer Kirsty Odds, who works from her garden studio in Aberlady. She creates fresh, contemporary woven pieces, predominantly for use in interiors and accessories, on traditional looms.

Roobedo brings you a unique collection of ready-to-wear utility inspired clothing, accessories and homeware in denim, linen, Harris tweed and Glenlyon tweed alongside preloved and salvaged materials. Roobedo cuts, stitches, prints and manipulates cloth, producing pieces designed to become favourites and last a lifetime.
Entirely a one-woman enterprise, creator Ruth just loves to make things and she designs, cuts, sews and photographs all her own work in Moulin at the foot of Ben Vrackie. Passionate about ethical and sustainable production, organic and Scottish fabrics are used wherever possible. Ruth also lectures part time in Textiles and runs sewing workshops.

Wee Collective is a partnership of makers, Laura McEwan and Urszula Jochim, based between Edinburgh and Glasgow. We support and inspire each other and collaborate on projects which focus on locally sourced and ethical materials and the highest standards of handmade craftsmanship.

We are an independent yarn maker from the Isle of Iona in the Inner Hebrides. Our range of knit and weaving yarn is made from the collective clip of the island’s flock, which is carefully sorted and graded to retain the best characteristics of the fleece, resulting in a truly sustainable product. Our tweed, woven scarves and blankets are designed in house and made a stone’s throw away by our friends at Ardalanish mill on the Isle of Mull, a wind powered micro-mill running some of the last heritage looms in the country.

Aamos Designs is a unique and talented textile design company, who specialise in contemporary woven textiles, owned by designer Emma Geddes, a 2006 graduate of the Glasgow School of Art. Emma is based in Shetland, she works from an energetic studio at her home in Burra. She is motivated to design original woven textiles, honouring traditional techniques, updating them to create unique and luxurious hand woven fabrics, for fashion and interiors. She is also known for her playful but confident use of colour, and contemporary use of time-honoured woven structures.

Katie Charleson is a screen printed homewares designer committed to creating sumptuous, unique textiles. In 2020, Katie introduced quilting, stitching and appliqué to her work, it becoming a key component of her practice. Combining print and stitch, Charleson makes work by collaging with fabric; using shapes and colour in an instinctual way. Katie works exclusively with natural fibres from ethical sources and many works embrace upcycling, making use of remnants and archival fabrics. She only uses water based inks in production, and is consciously introducing natural dyes while educating herself on the most environmentally positive way to continue creating textiles.

Garvald Textiles (Garvald Edinburgh)provide creative opportunities for adults with learning disabilites. Using high quality natural materials we produce a range of beautiful textiles, both apparel and interiors.

I am a textile artist using crochet and needle felting to create colourful pieces which reflect my fascination with anatomy, medical history and the natural world. My range of medically-inspired brooches and wall art are intended as an engaging way of taking things which are usually hidden and showing them to be vibrant and visible. I enjoy subverting the expectations that usually accompany woolly crafts. My work aims to challenge the artificial distinction between art and craft, in a playful manner, as well as being a place where art and science meet.

Fernweh UK is an accessories brand in Aberdeen by Laura Sherriffs , creating handcrafted bags and accessories inspired by a sense of adventure and the Scottish wilderness. Laura uses traditional materials such as Scottish waxed canvas and leather, tying her work directly to the land. Colour palettes reflect the rich land scapes and coasts of the Highlands and North East Scotland. Fernweh create rugged, unique designs blending aesthetics with function, with a focus on sustainability. Laura strives to create a brand that reflects these values, creating designs that minimise waste, repurposing offcuts where possible and making products that last.

Based in South East London Charlotte Grierson has been designing and hand weaving for over 20 years. She uses weave structures and a variety of yarns to create textured compositions, which are stretched over canvases. Her collections of hand woven scarves use natural materials; silk, linen and merino. Designed to be timeless and individual these scarves are all handwoven one-off pieces. Charlotte also has a collection of mill woven scarves, designed and sampled in her studio and woven in the UK.

Hungarian-born designer Zita Katona founded interior textile design business Zitozza in 2020 by after a decade-long career zig-zagging between graphic and textile design. During the pandemic lockdown, she decided to unite the two skillsets in the form of surface pattern designs for interiors - the result is a modular block printing system of with combinable, uniform printing blocks organised in two collections with an immense variety of designs on the coarse natural jute fabric. The elements combine Zita's Eastern European heritage of modernist, or brutalist architecture and the influence of Scotland’s textile industry with more traditional, botanical motifs. 

Helen Chatterton Textiles makes beautiful handcrafted textiles all made in the UK. Harris Tweed collection includes Harris tweed/Velvet/Liberty scarves and smaller items, prices ranging from £8-£80. Running concurrently is Helen’s City on Cloth collection of luxurious silk map scarves, designed by Helen and made in Macclesfield, Cheshire. Also made from the left over fabric from the scarves are lavender bags and notebooks covered in the silk. Cities include four different Edinburgh maps, London, Oxford, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Liverpool, Madrid and many more.

Hand dyed and hand printed fashion accessories which include a variety of styles of scarves printed on natural fabrics, silk shirts and silk covered buttons. Also commercially printed greetings cards showing my designs and hand printed limited edition wrapping paper.

Candy Coated Accessories current collections include luxury knitted lambswool hats, headbands and scarves for you, as well as hot water bottle covers for your home. Each item is exclusively designed by textile designer Fiona Ross in the north east of Scotland in her small but perfectly formed home studio. By combining her skills in machine knitting and sewing, the mixture of modern design and traditional technique complement each other perfectly. Her passion for bright colours and geometric patterns are definitely reflected in all of her products.

Michaelson Design printed textiles have previously been inspired by my photography of the built environment. Since moving to rural Fife, however, the history and archaeology of its linen industry have become more influential. For CLOTH#21 I am offering my ‘Ceres’ collection of bags and aprons in Fife linen, with printed designs derived from images of flax fields, the weaving process and the archaeological evidence of past industry. My original collection of silk scarves and squares will also be available. Sadly, the local weaving of Fife linen has been discontinued, so this will be the last of the ‘Ceres’ collection.

My textile prints are often inspired by walks in nature, patterns in the urban environment around me and Japanese textiles. My first love is hand screen printing onto natural cloth but I also design digitally for large scale projects, delicate silks and licencing artworks. I work with photographic and hand drawn imagery, layering the motifs and patterns using opaque and transparent inks in vibrant colour palettes. My distinctive patterns work beautifully across a wide range of homeware products including cushions and lampshades and fashion accessories including scarves and tote bags. Remnant cloth is repurposed as wearable art brooch badges.

Ursula Bevan Hunter has an MA in Illustration from the University of Edinburgh. Specialising in hand block printing, she produces pattern design for papers and textiles. Inspired by nature, she focusses on native species, that are beginning to disappear from our landscape. For Cloth#21 Ursula produced a new print inspired by the flower and seed of the Flax plant. After weaving Linen for hundreds of years, the closure of last mill in Kirkcaldy compounded the sense of loss of this once vital industry. Ursula is interested in working on commissions for private / public spaces, healthcare, hospitality and published books.

My work is driven by my passion for colour and unique print. I create small themed collec-tions of unique clothing and jewellery. Most of my work is screen printed or digitally printed onto natural fibres. The pieces of clothing created are fun, stylish and allow the wearer to stand out from the crowd! The designs are often inspired by my travels in Asia where I have had the privilege to learn Batik from local artists. There are always new additions to the col-lections throughout the year.
